Nestlé Trinidad and Tobago: Enhancing Quality of Life and Building a Healthier Future

Driven by purpose. Guided by values.

Nestlé’s Purpose-Driven Philosophy

In May 2017, employees of Nestlé Trinidad and Tobago gathered for a special Open House to mark the internal launch of The Nestlé Purpose. This imperative of purpose forms part of a global framework guiding Nestlé — the world’s largest food and beverage company — across 189 countries.

Rooted in more than 150 years of social responsibility, the Nestlé Purpose is simple yet ambitious:

“Enhancing quality of life and contributing to a healthier future.”

More than a statement, the Purpose acts as a decision-making compass for Nestlé’s operations, partnerships, and product innovation.

A Compass for Employees and Operations

For Nestlé’s 328,000 employees worldwide, the Purpose provides clarity and direction. According to Denise d’Abadie, Corporate Communications Manager at Nestlé Trinidad and Tobago, it defines why the company exists and how it seeks to positively impact society.

This purpose-driven approach guides Nestlé’s commitments at three interconnected levels of impact.

Three Pillars of Impact

Healthier Choices for Individuals and Families

Nestlé plays a unique role in the global nutrition chain, delivering over one billion servings of food and beverages daily. This scale brings responsibility.

Key commitments include:

  • Reducing sugar by over 30% across products globally in the past decade
  • Lowering sodium to support a daily intake of 2g per day, in line with World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines
  • Eliminating industrial trans-fats where possible

Product Innovation in Trinidad and Tobago

Locally, this commitment has led to product innovations such as ORCHARD® Calorie Conscious, designed to support weight management and diabetic-friendly diets.

Breakfast cereals sold in Trinidad and Tobago have also been improved:

  • Whole grain as the #1 ingredient
  • Total sugars reduced to 9g or less per serving
  • Salt reduced to 135mg or less per serving

Building Thriving Communities

Nestlé’s community impact focuses on education, employment, and youth development.

Flagship programmes include:

  • MILO® Jumpstart, which promotes physical activity and healthy lifestyles among children
  • MAGGI® Power of a Meal, teaching families how to prepare nutritious meals on a budget while supporting home gardening

Nestlé also partners with The Football Factory, a football academy that helps at-risk youth develop life skills through sport.

Supporting Farmers and Livelihoods

  • Improving productivity
  • Promoting sustainable farming practices
  • Strengthening long-term supply chain resilience

Environmental Leadership and Resource Stewardship

Nestlé Trinidad and Tobago is ISO 14001 certified, reflecting international standards in environmental management.

The company is recognised as a Caribbean leader in:

  • Recycling and waste reduction
  • Water stewardship
  • Waste-water treatment

Notably, Nestlé operates the first internal waste-water treatment plant of its kind in the Caribbean.

Nestlé continues to set ambitious environmental targets aligned with its long-term commitment to protecting natural resources for future generations.

Purpose in Action

From World Environment Day activities to youth sports development in Tobago and community nutrition programmes nationwide, Nestlé’s brands actively bring the Purpose to life.

By aligning business strategy with social and environmental responsibility, Nestlé demonstrates how scale can be a force for good.

“When consumers choose our brands, they don’t just enjoy a tastier and healthier product — they help make the world a little better,” says d’Abadie.

Rooted in Respect

Nestlé’s values are grounded in respect:

  • Respect for individuals and families
  • Respect for communities and diversity
  • Respect for the planet and the future

Together, these values ensure that Nestlé Trinidad and Tobago continues to contribute meaningfully to national development while supporting healthier lives.
