The Bird Strike Challenge NIHERST Partnership
One of the programme’s most notable innovation initiatives was the Bird Strike Challenge NIHERST collaboration.
Launched through a partnership between Shell and NIHERST, the challenge invited graduates of the Shell NXPlorers programme to develop solutions for bird strike risks within the aviation and offshore energy industries.
According to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), bird strikes are collisions between birds and aircraft during flight, takeoff, or landing. These incidents can threaten passenger safety, damage equipment, and result in wildlife fatalities.

Forty-five university students participated in the initiative and were divided into teams that underwent several weeks of intensive training and mentorship with industry experts.
